You may want a bottom border on your roman blind to give more interest, bring another colour in from the room scheme or have a contrast border showing on the botttom section of a cascading blind or a blind with a bottom flap when pulled up. It is also a useful option if you are re-working an old blind that is too short and you need to add fabric to lengthen it.
Adding a bottom border to a Roman Blind is relatively easy but requires care to get the join straight and not puckered, especially if using movable fabrics such as a linen.
In this mini tutorial we show you the method and technique using a light and a dark plain linen to form a simple 5cm deep border straight across the bottom of the blind.

FABRIC REQUIRED FOR THE BORDER
The fabric required to form the bottom border is the same cut width as the main blind fabric and the minimum cut length is as follows.
We would also add a trimming allowance (minimum of 6cm) to get the fabric straight and square.
NOTE: If you are using a patterned fabric for your border you may want to include extra fabric length so you can vertically place the pattern in the best position on the blind.
FABRIC REQUIRED FOR THE MAIN BLIND
You can obviously save some of the main fabric required by adding a border. But in the workroom we tend to keep it SIMPLE and just stick with the amount of fabric required for a blind with no border (we don't include a trimming allowance though). Then cut the fabric length down after joining the border fabric.
1: SIMPLE METHOD
PATTERN FABRIC
Note 1: If you are making a SINGLE blind with NO JOINED WIDTHS you will require the PLAIN FABRIC CUT DROP plus ONE PATTERN REPEAT to place the pattern on the blind.
Note 2: If you are making a WIDE BLIND (more than 1 width of fabric) with joined patterned fabric, you will need to use Adjusted Cut Drops. See WIDE BLIND tutorial.
Alternatively if you are lengthening a reworked blind you will need to be a little more EXACT in your calculation.
2: EXACT METHOD (FABRIC REQUIRED FOR THE MAIN BLIND)
PRO TIP
Plus we add a trimming allowance (minimum of 6cm) to get the main fabric straight and square.

No the border can be any depth you like. Indeed if you are making the border from a patterned fabric you will want to get the depth right to show the pattern best.
