MAKING A ROMAN BLIND SIDE FLAP

We almost always add side flaps to our Roman blinds when the blind is positioned outside the recess, to cover the ends of the headrail. It gives the blind a much neater and more professional look.

After experimenting with the many ways you can do this, our workroom method is a continuation of the face fabric (so no join line on the corner and a perfect continuation of any pattern). It also does not require the blind face fabric to be cut any wider either, so there is no extra face fabric required*.

*Note you can cover the inside of the flap with a fabric offcut or lining.

If you can make a blind following our instructions, you can make these side flaps, so we would encourage you to go for it and give your blind that extra WOW factor when you are showing someone what you've made.

Tools & Materials

  1. A4 Paper
  2. Pencil
  3. Vanishing Marker
  4. Old Scissors
  5. Double Sided Fusible Buckram (approx 2 strips 20cmx16cm
  6. 40cm std 2cm Loop Vecro
  7. 20cm std 2cm Adhesive Hook Vecro
  8. Small offcut of interlining if interlining the blind
  9. Fabric or lining offcut approx A4 size

Don't be tempted to make side flaps for blinds inside the recess, because

  • You won't see them - they'll be squashed against the wall.
  • They may make your blind too wide for the recess.

The first thing to do is make a template to mark out and cut the side flap material/lining used to line the inside of the side flap.

  1. On an A4 sheet of paper mark out the template as in the video.
  2. Cut the paper template out.

OPTIONAL

  1. Fold some single sided fusible buckram (glue sides together) and fuse.
  2. Mark the template outline on the buckram.
  3. Cut out

FAQs

Yes you can adjust the depth of your template and the curved shape to taste.

There are a couple of things to consider though.

  1. The absolute maximum depth will be your "Top Section" depth. ie the depth of the blind down to the first fold when up.
  2. The chain is often pulled at an angle slightly outwards from the the window and not directly downwards. The deeper you make the side flap, the more the chain will rub on the side flap. Hence why we make them the size we show you (to reduce this effect).
